Wattson Preview

We’re just over two weeks away from the release of the newest legend into King’s Canyon. Wattson will be entering the arena for the first time as a combatant starting on July 2. So, let’s take a look at how we can expect players to use her and her unique kit.

Tactical: Perimeter Security

Connect nodes to create electrified fences that damage and slow enemies.

How it will be most effective: Wattson’s defensive fences will be great for controlling chokepoints. Imagine the ring closing on a building that you must go into. Depending on how much damage the ability does, she may create no-go zones.

Which legends will benefit most: All legends will be able to go through friendly fences unscathed, but Caustic stands to gain the most. As the only legend who is completely defenseless out in the open a team that has both Wattson and the mad scientist will likely look to fight indoors, moving from building to building and staying away from wide open spaces.

What we want to know: Will it be possible to zig-zag six gates back and forth in a tight formation to amplify the damage doled out? If it is possible, anyone that tries to run directly through might be “shocked” by the HP they lose.

Ultimate: Interception Pylon

Place an electrified pylon that destroys incoming ordnance and repairs damaged shields as long as it stands. (Max: 3)

How it will be most effective: Hiding the pylon around a corner (out of reach of bullets threatening to destroy it) will give you the ultimate safe space to revive downed teammates or heal.

Which legends will benefit most: Again, Caustic should benefit the most from this ability. Grenades are typically used to get Caustics out of enclosed areas, but with Interception Pylon nullifying ordinance completely, players will be forced into the gas traps of the big fella if they choose to engage.

What we want to know: How long will this pylon be active and which things can destroy it? Also, it’s a deployable, so most likely you’ll be able to bounce it off Octane’s Jump Pad. Can Pathfinder attach his grapple to it, and if he can, will he be pulled toward it or will he pull it toward himself?

Passive: Spark of Genius

Ultimate Accelerants fully charge your Ultimate Ability, and standing near interception pylons boosts your Tactical Ability recharge.

How it will be most effective: Loading up on Ultimate Accelerants and placing multiple pylons in an area will make grenades a total waste of backpack space. If this becomes meta, expect players to start carrying far more ammo than they do now.

Which legends will benefit most: Obviously Lifeline. She won’t have to be the only person who has to respond to random teammates pinging 50 UAs per match.

What we want to know: How fast do your abilities recharge, and how close do you need to be to the pylon for the passive to kick in?

Those are the things we think Wattson will be great at, who she’ll synergize well with, and the questions that still remain. We’ll be writing a more comprehensive guide about the newest addition to the game after testing her out on the live servers for a few days. Check back in early July for a complete guide. And, if you’d like to see how we play the other legends already in the game, head over here.
